What age is best to take a pacifier away, any tricks?

Ok my daughter is 17 months old and still uses a pacifier to fall asleep at night. She is also still waking up 2 times a night. I have a 6 month old as well so we are just used to getting up. Anyway I would really like to take it away but my husband thinks its going to be awful. MY little girl is stubborn. Anyone have experience? how long did it take them to forget about it? Any tricks?
