Can anyone tell me about affirmative action as it relates to title vii of the civil rights act?

I guess it was an attempt to right the wrongs that are the genesis of title 7. It was common at the time to discriminate for the listed reasons. Affirmative action was devised to catch up and make ordinary the mix of race and gender, etc. in the American marketplace. Today it seems to have outlived the original purpose.
